What is a spirit baby? | 3/27/25
If spirit babies are new to you, I’m here to tell you what a spirit baby is and how I can support you and your spirit babies.
Spirit babies defined
A spirit baby is a soul before they begin life on earth - the soul of a baby waiting to be born, on their way into the world. They are the souls who choose you to become their parents. They are spirits before they come to life and have a body. They have understanding and skill that is more expansive than a human baby. Imagine infinite consciousness preparing to live in a tiny new vessel!
BUT, they are preparing and practicing to be babies in this world. Because of this, if or when you communicate with your spirit baby directly, it is helpful and welcome to think about talking with them the way you would a new baby.
Unlike souls who have departed – just completing a cycle of living, dying, and crossing over – spirit baby souls are much more flexible and fluid. Our loved ones on the other side stay tied to their personalities and identities for a time as a way to be familiar to us, and so they can continue evolving and working through karma. Spirit babies, on the other hand, are nurturing, creative, and much more open to possibility, as Walter Makichen describes in his book, Spirit Babies.
Even though spirit babies are their own “type” of spirit, they still communicate with us the way any spirit can.
Do I have a spirit baby?
In my experience, if you are exploring parenthood or actively working to become a parent, you have a spirit baby, or babies. If this is you and you feel like you are receiving signs, you probably are!
Your spirit baby wants to be in communication with you. Like in any of your committed relationships, they are here to collaborate with you in Life. They will have needs and wants, but also want to see your needs and wants be met.
Your spirit baby chooses YOU for any number of significant reasons. Sometimes it’s about access to tools, a path, or even healing they hope to do in this lifetime. Sometimes it’s because they know you have something to teach them, or they have something to teach you. Sometimes, I’ve seen the choice be karma-based: a role reversal between you from a past lifetime. Or your souls were family in a past life and you all feel like you have more to do together, so you reincarnate in the same family formation. This can shine some light on soul contracts you make with your spirit baby.
How spiritual do you need to be to connect with your spirit baby?
You don’t have to be spiritual to go on a spirit baby journey, but your relationship with spirituality will probably shape your approach to spirit baby communication. If you are a highly spiritual person, you’ve probably interacted with spirits in a clear way. If not, this could all feel new. And new things can be exciting, or overwhelming! However you see yourself, there are perfect paths to take to meet your spirit baby.
Have you ever talked to a loved one after their death? Just like there is a transitional space after life, there is also a waiting room before life. Communicating with your spirit baby is like talking to anyone else you love who isn’t in a body right now. Of course the energy can feel different, because you haven’t “met” them yet. Some of these babies may be preparing for their first time on earth, some may have made the journey before.
In addition, each of us has a team of spirit guides that support us through life. I have seen that this team of guides is assigned to spirit babies before birth. Some of our guides have lived on earth before and some have chosen to be spirit only this time around. You could think of these guides as a spiritual council. On the council with the guides can be ancestors and angels.
Regardless of your beliefs, I see a team for you and a team for each spirit baby who is getting ready to choose their parents.
Conception and pregnancy challenges
If you’ve been trying to get pregnant and you feel stuck, spirit baby communication can be a helpful support or can even bring you a breakthrough.
When we are looking to feel healthy and support fertility, most of us know getting enough sleep, nourishing food, and exercise can be so helpful. Maybe you also go to therapy for mental health maintenance. Spending time connecting to your spirit baby is another great way to tend your health and the health of current or future pregnancies. After all, this is the soul of someone who wants to grow inside your body!
Just like we can feel out of balance if there are emotions we haven’t made space for, sometimes the communication between you and your spirit baby is challenged. There are infinite reasons why your spirit baby may feel distant or hard to birth/conceive. Or maybe they feel close, but you’re unable to bring them earthside. You may be experiencing difficulty conceiving or staying pregnant. You could have blocks in any of the following areas: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, or sexual. You may be learning a life lesson that hasn’t made sense yet.

What about spirit babies and pregnancy Loss?
If you’ve lost a pregnancy or pregnancies, sometimes your spirit baby will try to come through again. Sometimes, the next spirit baby who chooses you will step in instead.
After abortion and miscarriage, the baby’s soul still feels like a spirit baby to me. It’s like they return to the spirit baby waiting room, not the “other side.” When spirit babies “don’t make it” all the way through to being a healthy child, there’s still something about their creativity and flexibility that allows for clear communication, making it easier to connect.
Sometimes the communication you’ve invested in with your spirit baby can give you grounded support as you process your grief. Or, if you’re discovering spirit baby communication after loss, reaching out to your spirit baby could be a balm, maybe even giving you peace or clarity.
